St John Passion

This supreme choral work, one of Bach’s favourites among his own compositions, has all the ingredients that are essential for the most compelling of music-dramas. It has a cast of characters which include a bloodthirsty crowd, a serene hero, flawed personalities in Simon Peter and Pontius Pilate, all in a familiar story related by a narrator in the timeless words of John’s Gospel.
While exhilarating choruses spur on the relentless progress of the action, arias and chorales provide moments of reflection and calm contemplation. In its entirety, the work provides one of the most emotionally uplifting experiences in the whole of music.
Our performance will be sung in English.
