Enjoy a double dose of the finest delta tunes, courtesy of a live
performance from Michael Roach, followed by a tale from Mississippi
interspersed with cracking archive performances. Michael Roach sings
and plays guitar in a style of blues that dates back to the 1920s.
After spending several years learning directly from such well-known
figures as John Jackson, John Cephas and Jerry Ricks, Michael Roach
has developed his own style and is now an exceptional performer, with
six albums to his credit. On his last two visits to the Little,
tickets flew out so don’t miss out. Followed by WARMING BY THE
DEVIL’S FIRE [12A] Director Charles Burnett. Starring Carl Lumbly,
Tommy Redmond Hicks, Nathaniel Lee Jr. US 2003. 106 mins. Charles
Burnett (Killer of Sheep, My Brother’s Wedding, To Sleep with Anger)
presents a tale about a young boy’s encounter with his family in
Mississippi in the 1950s, and intergenerational tensions between the
heavenly strains of gospel and the devilish moans of the blues.
Featuring stunning archive footage of a wealth of Blues legends such
as Bessie Smith and Lightnin’ Hopkins, this mix of drama and
documentary drips with Deep South atmosphere.

Charles Burnett: “The sound of the blues was a part of my
environment that I took for granted. However, as years passed, the
blues slowly emerged as an essential source of imagery, humor, irony
and insight that allows one to reflect on the human condition. I
always wanted to do a story on the blues that not only reflected its
nature and its content but also alludes to the form itself. In short,
a story that gives you the impression of the blues.”
