Shipwreck leather craft course at the Welshmill in Frome

June 26, 2019

Frome’s business hub The Welshmill Building is home to a variety of entrepreneurs and crafts people, including the Men’s Shed, Edventure and an array of craftspeople who make everything from bicycles, bags, books and furniture. In amongst this bustling hive of activity is Frome’s resident bookbinder, Stephen Glendenning, who spends his time repairing antiquarian books for museums and libraries. Now Stephen has launched a unique bookbinding class where craft enthusiasts can make their own leather bound notebook from real shipwreck leather. The 200 year old leather has been salvaged from a shipwreck by a team of Plymouth divers in Devon. Stephen explains, “The leather is a very special material originating from a tannery in Russia where the curing process involved Willow bark and birch oil to preserve it”. Aided by the passage of time and generous amounts of seawater this leather, known in the trade as “Russia Leather”, has the most remarkable aroma. Channel even created a fragrance named after it !
The course begins on the 26th June.
