Jeremiah! Inspired Interiors

April 25, 2016 - July 1, 2016

Running from Tuesday 19 April to Friday 1 July, the American Museum is pleased to present Jeremiah! Inspired Interiors, a retrospective of Goodman’s signature room portraits curated by Dean Rhys-Morgan.

Born in Niagara Falls on October 22, 1922 Jeremiah Goodman is revered within the interior design community for his rare ability to infuse static rooms with warmth and personality. More than mere illustrations, his paintings interpret and inspire, conveying how a space is experienced through the eyes of an artist.

For almost seven decades his stylish and studied brushstrokes have chronicled the homes of powerbrokers in the upper reaches of the fashion and decorating worlds. Names like Blass, Vreeland, Peretti and Duquette populate a client list that reads like a page from Who’s Who. Indeed, so evocative and full of particularized information are Jeremiah’s paintings that they form a unique record of the work of many of the great design personalities of the past half century.

Inducted to the prestigious Interior Design Hall of Fame in 1987 Goodman’s work is widely collected and published. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cooper Hewitt Museum have included Jeremiah’s work in their permanent collections, while his paintings have been a staple of all the best fashion and design magazines for decades.

Still vital and energetic at 93, Goodman has opened up his archives to the American Museum and made available a number of his favorite paintings, for this his first European retrospective.
