Life Forces is a duet performed by choreographer Jane Mason and writer Phil Smith, created in collaboration with dramaturg David Williams, sculptor Sophia Clist and film-maker Magali Charrier. Lighting design is by Chloe Kenward.

With its initial trigger in Jane’s father’s old slide projector and his archive of images, Life Forces uses materials, objects and movement to explore light, change, place and home – the utopian impulse to build things together and to let them go.

The piece offers a meditation on processes of transformation and loss as life forces that link everything and everyone.

“Jane Mason’s choreography captures the moment when all certainties seem to dissolve, and life and the human body suddenly seem so fragile.”
Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

“Jane Mason is an artist of rare and quiet originality. Life Forces, her powerfully intimate new work, is brimming with invention, secrets and play. It is a deeply affecting and masterful theatrical miniature”.
Wayne McGregor CBE

Commissioned by ICIA Life Forces is supported by Arts Council England, Swindon Dance,The Place, ICIA, Pavilion Dance South West, The Point, South East Dance, Exeter City Council and Kaleider.
