Ghost of Eden – Charisse Gardiner
February 1, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
South African artist Charisse Gardiner explores themes of home, displacement and identity set against the background of childhood and the elusive nature of memory. Rich in open-ended narratives and inducing a haunting sense of nostalgia, Gardiner weaves together a complex tapestry of tensions exploring loss and discovery and the foundations of culture.
Charisse Gardiner says that the themes within her work are often related to each other. What connects them is the elusive and intangible nature of how they are sometimes experienced (sensed rather than understood). She is also interested in the concept of change within these sensations. For example, innocence to knowledge, sleep to awakening, pre-linguistic to speech, entrances and passages within journeys. Working frequently from old photographs, partly because they allude to memory, history and transition, her intention is to form and suspend these subtle and essentially irretrievable and imperceptible moments into her paintings.
