Films For Peace

September 21, 2014 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

£5.00 – £7.00

To celebrate The United Nations INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE and to remember the tragedy of World War I which was unfolding 100 years ago, Bath Stop War Coalition is showing two films which recall the horror and stupidity of that bloody conflict.
4pm       Joyeux Noel . Directed by Christian Carion in 2005 this dual language film tells the story of the well documented unofficial ceasefire around Christmas in 1914. A spontaneous act of decency by ordinary soldiers on both sides was deemed dangerous and subversive by their officers and they were forced back into their trenches at gunpoint.
7 pm      Oh! What A Lovely War. Directed by Richard Attenborough in 1969 this film version of Joan Littlewood’s acclaimed Theatre Workshop Stage Production mixes the horror of life in the trenches with the false hopes and aspirations of music hall ballads and soldiers’ songs of the day. A rare chance to see this star studded film on the big screen!

“It wasn’t worth it. No war is worth the loss of a couple of lives let alone thousands” – ‘The Last Fighting Tommy’ by Harry Patch (1898 – 2019), Combe Down plumber and last surviving British combatant.
