The English Concert has been renowned for its Mozart performances since its pioneering recordings of the symphonies under its founder-director Trevor Pinnock in the 1990s; and it maintains its Mozartian reputation in the present day. The orchestra’s concert in the historic
setting of Bath Abbey, under its artistic director Harry Bicket, begins with a prodigiously accomplished Divertimento from around the time of Mozart’s 16th birthday. The brilliantly gifted Nadja Zwiener is the soloist in the Fifth Violin Concerto, with its finale imitating the fashionable “Turkish” style. The soprano Lucy Crowe, celebrated for her Mozart performances, sings three notable arias from the composer’s early operas, a moving number from the unfinished C minor Mass, and the famous showpiece motet Exsultate, jubilate.
