Auf Flügeln des Gesanges (On Wings of Song)
January 11, 2017 @ 7:30 pm
Antje Siefert (mezzo-soprano) performs in opera, oratorio and solo
recitals in Germany and other European countries. She has
long-standing family associations with Bath and this is her first
concert here. She performs regularly with pianist Sybille
Hempel-Abromeit and they both live in Bath’s twin city of
Featuring works by composers including Michael Tippett (who our
concert venue is named after and who used to live locally in Corsham
– running the Bath International Music Festival for five years from
1969), Benjamin Britten, Henry Purcell and George Odam.
George Odam worked at Bath Spa University from 1965 – 1999 and was
responsible for establishing the BA (Music) degree course as well as
becoming the first professor of music. As composer of a number of the
pieces at this concert George says: “Although from very different
sources and times, the eight poems I have chosen form a progression
from Summer to Spring and many are for me deeply resonant of the
English countryside, its flora and fauna.”
Antje Siefert studied at the Hanover University of Music and Drama at
Mayling Konga and at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam with Margreet
Honig and Jard van Nes. Characteristic of her work is the versatility:
she can be heard with literature from early baroque to contemporary.
The pianist Sybille Hempel-Abromeit, who was born in Tübingen, began
to play the piano and sing choirs as early as childhood. During the
piano studies in Freiburg i. Br. And Munich, she gave concerts in all
conceivable combinations: song recitals, chamber music, piano duets,
sonatas programs with strings or wind instruments, even dances
arranged with dancers, actors or speakers.
